Year 3 - The Meerkats 2010/11
8 April: Will Mr. Conway's desk grow?
Wood comes from trees. Trees are alive and grow and they need water to grow. Mr. Conway's desk is made from wood. So if we put the wooden leg of Mr. Conway's desk in water will it grow? This is one of the things we have been investigating, Some of the class thought it would, others thought it might and half thought it wouldn't. So there was only one thing to do... Try it !
After two weeks of a leg sitting in a pan of water, we noticed no discernible difference. Carla ( thinking very scientifically ) said that we should have measured the height of the desk at the beginning and at the end of our investigation to see if it had changed. How right she was. So as we have not measured the desk we can only say now that we "think" it has not grown. One child pointed out that if only the leg in water grew the table would become "wobbly" and it hasn't done that.
Another puzzle though has arisen... Where has all the water gone? WE are pretty sure that it has not all gone up the wooden leg, though some of it did soak up into the leg as you can see in the picture. But where has all the rest gone? It looks like we need to do some more investigations on what happens to water when it lies around in the classroom or elsehwere for a while, and why ?
8 April 11: The Continuing Adventures of our Meerkats.
Some of our children continue to chronicle what Mervyn and his baby Meerkat Munchkin and our other Meerkat Melissa get up to when they stay with our children at the weekends.
Jessica drew and coloured in a beautiful pictorial diary of her weekend with Mervyn and Munchkin as well as writing all about it. See image below
J. chose to make a photographic record of what Mervyn and Munchkin got up to a couple of weekends ago. Click here to view
Well done girls. You gave our Meerkats a great time !

11 March: LITERACY in Year 3
In literacy in the next two weeks we are going to be looking at how to write instructions.
To help us identify where instructions are used and to explore the features of instructions we
would like your child to look around the home and see if they can find examples of instructions
that they can bring in to school on Monday the 14th to share with the class.
Recipes are an obvious example, but it would be better if they could find other types of
instructions. It may be that you have kept some from when you built a piece of furniture, or
it might be that there are games, or instructions for setting up and using electrical equipment
that the children could look at and bring in. Instructions with and without diagrams are welcome.
Limit it to, at most, two examples for your child to bring in.
8 March: Is Mr. Conway's desk alive? That is the question.
We have been discussing what plants are in science.
After a long debate we agreed that trees are plants
and that they are alive.
Wood comes from trees. Mr. Conway's desk is made from wood.
So....is Mr. Conway's desk alive ?
4 March: YEAR 3 Science
Over the next three weeks we wil be looking at what makes plants grow well.
Here are some web links to sites that explore this subject. The children could explore these websites with you to learn more about what we are covering in science and perhaps even more!

DEC 10: CINDERELLA ROCKAFELLA
YEAR 3 Meerkats just before the CINDERELLA ROCKAFELLA performance.
They all did brilliantly under Mrs. Eagle's stage direction.

Another Advent Calendar
One of our children gave us the web address for an interactve games advent calendar.
Here it is for you to enjoy.
Dec 10: French Christmas Advent Calendar
Ms Rivers has kindly given us a link to a web based French Advent Calendar that we have just started to open up in Year 3.
The children really love it, so I thought I would put the link on our Class page so that people at home can share with our children.
You can get there by clicking here.
Enjoy the fun!

Sept 10: Melissa and Mervyn "On Tour"
Our two class Meerkats are handed out each Friday evening to members of the class. Their names are Melissa and Mervyn ( Mervyn carries his baby Meerkat - "Munchkin" ) with him everywhere. Sometimes our lucky Meerkats go out with the children to see and do exciting things. Here are some photos of their recent trips. Melissa went to the local Forest Fair in Crawley and Mervyn with Munchkin went to a local agricultural show where one of our Year 3 girls won three FIRST prizes for her cakes and vegetable displays.
