Year 4 MeerkatsFeb 12: Meerkats Eat a Tiger!
Thanks to Jacob's handywork with a little help from mum, Year 4 were really lucky to be able to eat a Tiger cake that Jacob had made at home as part of his topic work. It tasted absolutely gorgeous and was "wolfed" down by a pack of very hungry Meerkats at the end of a long day. It's not every day you get chance to turn the tables on a tiger!
More homework is coming in now and we wil be showing it all off on our class page.
SO WATCH THIS SPACE!

Year 4 MeerkatsFeb 12: Learning Lots in Language Lab Lesson

Say that headline quickly!
Our children have been down to Henry Box to have a go at learning some basic Urdu words, using state of the art language laboratory equipment.
They really enjoyed it. "I did not want to leave!" sighed Samantha.
A very big "THANK YOU" to Mrs Mainwareing at Henry Box for hosting our visit. Check out what we got up to in the two videos below.

Jan 12: READING CRITICS in YEAR 4Jan 12: READING CRITICS in YEAR 4

The children are being encouraged to write reviews of the books they read at school and at home. This is particularly useful for others to read before they choose a book at the mobile library each month. The Reviews are kept in a file on our reading wall so they can be read in a spare moment. There are some example in the photos. I will send home a couple of review sheets with each child so that they have one if they want to review a book at home. It is part of our drive to make the children think about and reflect on what they read.

Read some of our reviews:

Horrible Histories      The Clumsy Crocodile

The Secret Garden

Year 4 MeerkatsJan 12: Making Sense of Maths Language

This week and next we are looking at word based questions in maths and the language they use. Maths words can appear like a foreign language and the challenge for the children is to understand what key words actually mean and what type of sum they need to do as a result of what the question means.

Year 4 MeerkatsDec 11: Year 4 Meerkats have a pizzalicious time down at Frankie and Benny's in town.
Year 4 had a wonderful time at a Pizza Workshop offered up free of charge by F&B's. The children worked in groups to make their own pizza from a pizza base, tomato puree and the raw ingredients of their choice. They learned that a commercial pizza oven operates at 400degC ( that's twice as hot as the oven at home!). This means that the pizzas cook really quickly. More...

Oct 11: The Meerkats elect their school councillorsOct 11: The Meerkats elect their school councillors
Last week we carried out elections to appoint our class's school councillors. We asked for nominations, then we had an initial vote to whittle the candidates down to two boys and two girls for the final vote. The final candidates wrote a short election speech to try to persuade their class mates to vote for them. In a final secret ballot Jack and Jessica S narrowly defeated Ajay and Hollie to become this year's school councillors. They succeed Sam and Jorja who did a fantastic job last year.
Well done to Jessica S and Jack and good luck.

Oct 11: Year 4 Topic Work - Emergency Services
We are lucky enough to have three different Emergency Service Professionals coming into school this term to talk to Year 3 and 4 about their jobs. We have asked them all to show the children how reading, writing and maths plays an important role in their daily lives as well as all the other things that our children want to know.
We were lucky enough to have a nurse come into school this term to talk to us about her job...

Future Visits to School for this term's topic
We are lucky enough to have a Police Officer - Jon Payne coming to school to talk to Years 3 and 4 about what it is like to be a police officer. We also have an ex Coast Guard who used to work on Search and Rescue Helicopters to tell us all about this important and exciting job of saving lives on our coastlines. I am sure the children will come home with stories about these visits.

One of our children kept a diary of their weekend with Melissa.

It was beautifully presented with some good writing.

Sept 11: Some great puzzles to get you and your child thinking
The website below has a range of great puzzles that you could do with your child. They test maths, literacy and logic. Doing them together will be great fun. Be careful, some of these puzzles are addictive. Try the maths triangles for starters or if you like jigsaws then try the bible jigsaw puzzles, or the sliding tiles puzzles. You can make them as hard or easy as you want. Start on level 1 puzzles and work your way up with your child. Good luck and have fun.

Sept 11: Zoe's Cartoon inspires the class. Sept 11: Zoe's Cartoon inspires the class.
Zoe decided to make her own cartoon story at home. She kept it simple with just six scenes. The story is based on a character of her own making called Mr. Pizza. While being very simple there are some onomatopoeic words, and the use of the clock and changing scene out of the window to show time passing are nice touches.
We talked in class about using story boards like this to set the scene and develop the plot of a story or a film or play prior to writing it. I think this will inspire other children in class to make up their own short cartoons.
Well done Zoe, the class loved it, and it is a very cheerful start to our new school year.
