Using Place Value and Column addition to meet a challenge
A small group of children were given a challenge of using only the ten digits 0 to 9 to make two five digit numbers that added up ( as near as possible ) to 80,000. Then they had to do the same for multiples of 10,000 less down to 30,000. This allowed them to manipulate digits on a place value grid and think about how numbers change when they change places and the effect this has on the size of subsequent numbers. It also made them think about carrying over tens, hundreds or thousands when they were adding the numbers up.
